Boxing Programs for Young People
Schenectady Youth Boxing and Fitness is an after-school and
recreational program that offers a safe haven and supportive
environment to inner-city youths and young adults. The program
uses boxing and physical exercise as an alternative to drug use and
gang involvement and creates a positive support system for young
people through physical training, coaching, mentoring and social
support.

Youth After School
Program
SYB's after-school program for kids
eight to 14 offers a safe, secure environment for afternoon
activities and encourages positive attitudes, hard work and physical
fitness. Young people also learn how to deal with peer pressure, develop a
sense of belonging and receive supportive coaching and mentoring.
Completing homework is a daily requirement for participation in the
program and tutors from Union College regularly volunteer to help
young boxers complete work and break down challenges to learning. |

Junior Olympic
Competition Program
Some
youth at SYB compete in local, regional and national boxing
tournaments, which server as a basis for learning and
applying social skills. Amateur, Olympic-style boxing
is a safe, competitive sport that helps young participants
develop self-esteem, self-discipline and good character. The
program introduces the fundamentals of the competitive sport
and supports the boxer through the early stages of
competition in the regional and national Junior Olympic
program. |
